Dr. Shrager is identified as one of “America’s Top Doctors” in Castle Connolly’s prestigious listing and was also listed multiple years running as a “Top Doc” in Philadelphia Magazine. Most recently, Dr. Shrager was awarded US News and World Report “Top Doctor” recognition in 2012, rated among the top 1% of thoracic surgeons nationwide by that publication. Evidence of his expert status among his peers includes membership on the editorial board of the Annals of Thoracic Surgery.

Dr. Merritt practices all aspects of thoracic surgery but has special interest in minimal access surgery for gastroesophageal reflux disease, VATS lobectomy for lung cancer, and tracheal surgery.

Dr. Hoang practices general thoracic surgery, having had diverse exposure to re-operative thoracic surgery, lung-sparing bronchoplastic surgery, esophageal procedures, Pancoast tumors, VATS, and transcervical thymectomy.

Dr. Burt’s clinical interests are in thoracic oncology and include lung cancer, malignant pleural mesothelioma, and esophageal cancer. Dr. Burt has a special clinical and research interest in the variant of lung cancer that has “lepidic” or “bronchioalveolar” features.
Walter Cannon, MD Walter B. Cannon, MD

Cannon graduated from Harvard College and Harvard Medical School in 1969, completed his entire residency at Stanford in 1975, and joined the Palo Alto Medical Clinic (PAMC). In 1990, Cannon joined Dr. Jim Mark part-time on the Stanford University Thoracic Surgery Service. He is still part of that service but resigned from the PAMC in 2006 to become a co-director of Operating Room Services at Stanford Hospital & Clinics.
